Vintage Clip on Earrings Up for Auction

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Chunky Earrings — who ever thought they’d come back?  They certainly bring back memories for me, along with the vests and big hair of the 80′s.  And yet when a friend gave me her whole collection, I discovered — they’re vintage!

So guess what’s up for auction this week?  You guessed it, some vintage clip on earrings in that funky chunky style.  Pictured here is my favorite pair– because even though I never actually wear them,  I love rhinestones! These 3+ inch long sparkly things are one heck of a statement, I can tell you that much.

Also there are a pair of screwbacks with a lovely moss green stone, and a whole lot of those big old chunky style clip ons.

There will be more auctions of coins and other good stuff coming up, so visit the eBay store often this week!

Meanwhile for your enjoyment, I did a little research on some fun articles across the web about funky 80′s style. Be sure to read the second one listed– “Hooker Earring Wednesday” sounds like it could be fun!

Cocktail Rings – The Life of the Party

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

ring-eleborate-silver-and-diamond-274smIt wasn’t until I started digging into my mother-in-law’s jewelry that I began to understand the cocktail ring.  Jane was blessed with long slender fingers, and she new how to style them.  Just add to them her long manicured nails, cigarette dangling from one hand, cocktail ring (and cocktail drink) in the other and you would think she stepped out of a prohibition era speakeasy.

Instead she was a farm girl from Oklahoma with a flair for fashion and the face and body with which to show it off.  I have auctioned off many of her collected items in the last few years since her passing, and it has felt good  to know that her loves live on with those who have purchased them.

It is in her honor again that we look at the Cocktail Ring.  I have found some great articles that show some wonderful samples and give a bit of history for you.  The above picture is one of the last items up for auction from Jane’s estate.

I recently posted another article on Right-Hand Rings– similar and yet distinctly different.  Right-Hand Rings are also a bit more “gregarious” than their wearever wedding ring cousins, but they are designed to be worn regularly.  The Cocktail ring is the party animal — perhaps outrageous, over the top elegant- it’s the ring you wear just on those special occasions when you want to really strut your stuff.

‘Nuff said, read on and enjoy.

Cubic Zirconia Engagement Rings

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

SGRS051_1I got engaged on Valentine’s Day.  My husband proposed a few days before, but in the spirit of romance I made him wait for his answer.  It seemed so novel to me at the time to get engaged on Valentine’s Day, but when we went to a public event that night the announcer asked how many people in the audience had gotten engaged that day, and I was floored by the number of people raising their hands.

So perhaps it’s not such a unique idea, but that doesn’t make it any less romantic.  And in this economy the would-be engaged person has to think carefully about the purchases they are making while planning/hoping to spend the rest of their lives with that special someone.

Fortunately, gone are the days when only gems from the earth were considered to be worthy of the engagement ring or wedding set.  Today we have Cubic Zirconia, which seems to have earned it’s place in the “lasts forever” category of quality jewelry, while still maintaining an affordable price.

Only jewelers can spot the difference between these beauties and gemstones that came from the ground. This man made mineral is harder than almost any other gem except for the diamond; it is flawless to the naked human eye and the majority of it is a clear color- totally gorgeous!SGRW442_1

It used to be that a man was expected to spend two month’s salary on an engagement ring at the least.  That is not only often unrealistic for those young and in love (or just in love) but not so necessary any more.

Today I look at some articles about Cubic Zirconia, and suggest some nice engagement ring options (of course available at DelibCreate’s eBay Store)– it is for sure time to make those purchases if you want to do a classic proposal on Valentine’s Day!
